Your first Renta tax return in Spain: the expat guide

TL;DR Quick summary for those in a hurry

Your first Spanish Renta is filed between April and late June of the year after you become resident. Three things make it unlike anything you've filed up north: the pre-filled "borrador" knows nothing about your Nordic income (adding it is on you), access runs through a digital certificate or Cl@ve, and Beckham-regime users file Modelo 151 instead of the normal Renta. Here's the step-by-step for a first filing that doesn't haunt your next five.

If you come from Sweden, Denmark, Norway or Finland, you've been spoiled: the deklaration arrives essentially finished, you approve it from your phone, done. Spain will humble you. Your first resident-year Renta starts from a nearly blank page — especially for everything that stays connected to home. It's the single tax event where newcomers make their costliest mistakes, precisely because they expect a system that "already knows". Let's walk the campaign in order.

Must you file? (Spoiler: almost certainly yes)

Spain's filing-exemption thresholds (around €22,000 of employment income from a single Spanish payer, much less with several payers) tempt some newcomers into thinking they're off the hook. The reality for a Nordic arrival: any foreign income without Spanish withholding — rent from the flat in Malmö, dividends, a pension, a Nordic salary — makes filing practically unavoidable. And your first resident year is exactly when your whole home file enters the picture. Consider the question settled: you file.

One prerequisite: confirm you actually were a Spanish tax resident for the year in question — the Renta covers the full calendar year of your switch.

The calendar and the access keys

1

March: sort your access

1-2 weeks

Filing is online, via your FNMT digital certificate or Cl@ve. If you have neither, now is the moment — our FNMT guide saves you the classic three-week lockout.

2

April: campaign opens

day 0

The Agencia Tributaria's Renta portal opens in early April. Download your datos fiscales — what Hacienda knows about you — and note that they contain NOTHING from your Nordic tax agency.

3

April-May: build the complete return

2-4 weeks

Spanish income plus worldwide income: home rent, dividends (with credit for withholding), pensions per your treaty — or per unilateral rules if you're Danish, since no treaty exists. This is where everything is decided.

4

Before end of June: file (and direct debit earlier if paying)

deadline

The balance can be split in two payments (60%/40%). After the deadline, surcharges apply automatically — Spain has no Nordic-style grace culture.

The official campaign portal: Agencia Tributaria, Renta section; Cl@ve registration at clave.gob.es.

The 5 traps of a Nordic first Renta

  • Approving the borrador as-is

The pre-filled draft only contains Spanish data. Approving it without adding home rent, dividends and pensions means signing an incomplete return — mistake #1, and Hacienda increasingly cross-checks data received automatically from Nordic banks and agencies (CRS/DAC exchange).

  • Not invoking your treaty (or mishandling the Danish no-treaty case)

Each home income line lands where your treaty says — with credit for tax already withheld. Danes have no treaty with Spain and rely on unilateral relief only. Our treaty guide maps it line by line.

  • Filing the normal Renta while under the Beckham regime

Beckham-regime taxpayers file Modelo 151, not the standard Renta — the wrong form can compromise the regime itself. Verify with your adviser in year one.

  • Missing Modelo 720 (different deadline!)

The foreign-assets declaration is due in the first quarter (January-March), BEFORE the Renta campaign. Many discover the 720 while preparing their Renta — too late for the current year.

  • Ignoring regional deductions

Each autonomous community has its own deductions (rent, family, donations). They're lost if unclaimed — a line your gestor should review systematically.

⚠️
Close the loop with your home tax agency :

Your first Spanish Renta and your last home filings must tell the same story. Skatteverket, Skatteetaten, Skattestyrelsen and Vero each have exit processes and continued-liability rules (essential ties, three-year rules) — check your position on skatteverket.se, skatteetaten.no, skat.dk or vero.fi, and get your Spanish fiscal-residency certificate to activate the treaty at home.

First time: get help, then take back the wheel

Our constant advice: the first Renta with Nordic income deserves a cross-border tax adviser — it sets the qualifications (occupational pension? ISK gains? correct credits?) that every following year will simply reproduce. Once the framework is set, a standard gestor — or you, with your digital certificate — handles cruise-speed years.

FAQ

When is the Spanish Renta filed?
The campaign runs from April to late June of the year following the tax year. Filing is online via digital certificate, Cl@ve or reference number. After the deadline, surcharges apply automatically.
Does the pre-filled borrador include my Nordic income?
No. Hacienda's datos fiscales contain only Spanish data. Home rent, dividends, pensions and salaries must be added manually — approving the draft as-is is the most common newcomer mistake.
I'm under the Beckham regime: do I file the Renta?
Not the standard one: impatriate-regime taxpayers file Modelo 151, with its own rules. Using the wrong form can compromise the regime — verify with your adviser in year one.
Must I file if my income is below the Spanish thresholds?
The exemption thresholds (around €22,000 from a single Spanish payer) target purely Spanish situations. With foreign income lacking Spanish withholding — virtually every Nordic newcomer's case — filing is almost always mandatory.
What's the difference between the Renta and Modelo 720?
The Renta declares your income (April-June); Modelo 720 declares foreign assets above €50,000 per category, in the first quarter (January-March). Two obligations, two calendars — and the 720 is often missed because people discover it while preparing the Renta.

Your first Renta coming up?

I've been through this baptism myself. I can point you to advisers who actually master Nordic-Spanish files — including the Danish no-treaty case.
